Voter Registration for Your Church

Hello Pastor,

Two weeks ago, you should have received a packet from One Nation, Under God, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, encouraging you to consider having a Voter Registration Sunday (Patriot Sunday) at your church. The Pastors' Letter in the packet is below.

I would like to encourage you to serously consider helping to make sure more of our Christian brothers and sisters are registered to vote! I have personally helped a number of our churches do voter registration Sundays. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me on my cell at 847-738-7339 or my office at 847-526-7339.

Thank you, Rev. Bob Vanden Bosch Dear Pastor, Life and the Family are under attack in Springfield and in Washington. This year, legislators at the State Capitol introduced legislation to make abortion-on-demand the law in Illinois and the law would negate the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Lawand greatly expand taxpayer funding of abortions. Additionally, legislators introduced a civil union – same sex marriage” bill in a continuing effort to have same-sex marriages in Illinois. Both have failed so far, but proponents vow to continue to push these bills as they work to get more votes!

What can the church do? There are many things that the church and Christians can do, but one of the first steps is to see that Christians are registered to vote. HOST A VOTER REGISTRATION SUNDAY AT YOUR CHURCH Year after year, churches of all faiths host voter registration Sundays to help register to vote members of their congregations all within the law and within the internal revenue service guidelines(see IRS Publication 1828).   These churches recognize that in a democracy, our nation needs the involvement of those who share strong Christian values. Unfortunately, there are many Christians who don’t vote, but are eligible to vote or could become eligible to vote. In the 2008 Elections, which had a larger voter turnout than normal, just under 57% of those eligible to vote did vote (and it’s about 37% in non-presidential years which is 2010). If more Christians who haven’t been voting, would vote, they could make a big difference in the outcome of numerous important election races that will help elect people with strong Christian values.

To have your church host a voter registration Sunday this Fall is easy. All you have to do is have someone in your church follow the instructions enclosed to arrange for a deputy registrar to come to your church to register people in your congregation to vote. Or you can obtain “voter registration’ applications online or at the office of your county clerk and send the completed forms into the county clerk’s office. There is no cost to you or your church. For more information or for questions, just contact Illinois Family Institute at 1-877-2-BE-SALT. CHURCH LEADERS ENCOURAGE PEOPLE OF FAITH TO VOTE

Many religious leaders encourage people of faith to be good citizens and good stewards of our country by voting in each election, whether local, state or national.

“If America is to survive, we must elect more God-centered men and women to public office – individuals who will seek Divine guidance in the affairs of state.” Billy Graham, Evangelist We live in a representative form of government where we are its leaders. It means that every citizen has a responsibility to participate in the decisions that are made, and that includes people of faith using their influence for what is moral and just. Dr. James Dobson, Focus On The Family God cannot sustain this free and blessed country, which we love and pray for, unless the Church will take right ground. Politics are a part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to their country as a part of their duty to God. Charles Finney, 19th Century Evangelist SIMPLE REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTERING TO VOTE To be eligible to register to vote, a person must be a U.S. Citizen and be or will be at least 18 years old on or before the election day. Two pieces of identification must be used for verification, one piece of which has a current address (one can even be a letter or bill mailed to the home). A registered deputy registrar can come to your church on a Sunday in October [call it Patriot Sunday or you can obtain voter registration applications online or at the office of your county clerk. We can help! We hope you will agree that Christians voting in our democracy is good citizenship and good stewardship – Saint (The Apostle) Paul certainly wasn’t afraid to use his citizenship.

Later, if you wish we can help get your church non-partisan voter guides to inform voters on the important issues Christians care about. Paul Caprio, Ralph Rivera, Rev.
